Praying for the Primary

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,

I got my voter’s pamphlet for the May 19, 2020 primary in the mail the other day. I switched from non-affiliated voter to a political party a few years ago just so I could vote in the primary. It is important to vote in the main election, of course, but the primary is the first winnowing for those who wish to be our elected leaders. We vote on who runs!
As I glanced through the pamphlet it occurred to me this is a ready-made prayer list. We can pray for individuals before they are even elected – what an opportunity!
The booklet contains a lot of information, including the platform of each political party and a list of the main candidates. The main portion of the material contains information on each candidate, including local and county positions.
Each and every person who steps up to run for office can use our prayers. You might begin with finding the candidates for your own district, county, and city and focusing on them.
What to pray? Pray for their wisdom and protection. Pray they find God’s perfect will for their lives. Pray, that if elected, they will do good for their constituents, that God will guide their steps. Pray for God’s choice and God’s will in the election.

Colossians 1: 9-10 records a prayer Paul prayed, For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.
Praying Paul’s prayer for each candidate is a good place to start.
There is also information on various school district and city measures. Pray over those, especially when it involves your city or school district or county.
The primary is May 19th. Don’t forget to vote!
