A Deeper Look: Lane County

Violence shall no longer be heard in your land, neither wasting nor destruction within your borders; But you shall call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise.  Isaiah 60:18 If we were driving Highway 101 down the 300 miles of Oregon coast, after leaving Lincoln Cou nty we would enter a narrow strip of Lane County. The Southern Oregon Coast is said to be from Coos Bay to the California border, or Brookings, so Lane County is roughly the middle coastal area of Oregon. Lane County is also – and primarily - the southern portion of the Willamette Valley and contains the population center of Eugene as well as the University of Oregon. Eugene is usually ranked third largest city in the state behind Portland and Salem. Lane County Lane County, and especially Eugene, is known for supporting arts and creativity. Education has long been a high priority with the establishment of the U of O in 1876. Progressive and innovative ideas have flourished in this area of Oregon with a college estab

A Deeper Look: Tillamook County

Captain Grey, Tillamook fight Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,   holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.   I Timothy 1:18-19 NIV Tales of Spanish galleons and ancient shipwrecks are high on my list of distractions when it comes to historical research. The point of researching the history of an area, in this case Tillamook County, is to locate events that happened in the past that we can pray over or even repent – like the killings at Murderer’s Harbor - when that seems appropriate. The Oregon coastline is such a place of mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure that distractions are inevitable. But, then, maybe there are things in those old stories to pray over after all?  Tillamook County, Oregon   Tillamook County’s long coastline is part of the "Graveyard of the Pacific&q

A Deeper Look: Clatsop County

Tonquin Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters,   they see the works of the  Lord , and His wonders in the deep. Psalm 107:22-24 In the North Coast region, the counties that lie along the Pacific Ocean south of the Columbia River, Clatsop is the northernmost and includes the mouth of the Columbia. While Oregon City and the surrounding areas were settled early by pioneer immigrants, Astoria has the earliest settlement by Americans with the brief establishment of Fort Astoria in 1811. This was settled by fur traders sent out by John Jacob Astor, who also sent a ship, the Tonquin, that blew up and sank further up the coast at Vancouver Island. While that disaster was the result of an attack by Native Americans, the stretch of coast from about Tillamook Bay up past Vancouver Island became known as The Graveyard of the Pacific, due to unpredictable weather and dangerous coastal features. It is thought that more than 2000 ships have been lost along that s

A Deeper Look: Marion County

Circuit Rider, Salem, Oregon And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you  bind   on   earth  will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose  on   earth  will be loosed in heaven. Matthew 16:19.   There are so many issues to pray about in Oregon in 2022. The governor’s race, the current legislative session that began February 1 st , Covid, Portland, the economy, our children and on and on. It is sometimes difficult to know where to focus our prayers. My advice is to pray in the Spirit and ask the Lord to direct your prayers where He needs them most. In this post we are looking at, if not a deeper look at least a review, of Marion County.   Marion County is one of the oldest counties in the state, one of the original four large counties (Champooick) established by the first Provisional government. It is also the site of those first meetings that created the state in Champoeg in 1843.   A rural and agricultural county in the center of the Willamette V
