Continue to Stand in the Gap: Marion County

Image
North Falls, Silver Falls State Park I urge then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.  I Timothy 2:1 Marion County has a three-member Board of Commissioners, the current commissioners are Kevin Cameron, Danielle Bethell , and Colm Willis . The County Sheriff is Joe Kast . Salem is the county seat, and, of course, is also the Oregon state capital. The above verse is particularly appropriate with Marion County being the site of the state capital. Pray not only for the county commissioners but the state legislators and officials as well. As we have written elsewhere , Marion County was one of the original four counties that made up early Oregon. It was established in 1843 and called Champooick District then, renamed Marion later in honor of Francis Marion, aka “The Swamp Fox,” a leader of the Continent...

Pray for Those in Authority: Marion County

Image
Capital in Salem, Marion County, OR Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable  life in all godliness and reverence. I Timothy 2:1-2 Named after Francis Marion, the South Carolina Revolutionary War hero also known as The Swamp Fox, Marion County has been in existence since 1843 when it was known as the Champooick District. As one of the original four districts in Oregon, it was huge. It didn’t reach it present smaller size (1,194 square miles) until 1856. Marion County is now the 5 th largest in the state by population. The county seat is Salem, which is, of course, also the state capital. Pray for the government leaders in Salem, both on the state and the county level. For this [praying for all men] is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth...

County Spotlight: Marion County

Image
Canyon Trail, Silver Creek Falls, Marion County Thus saith the Lord, stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls… Jeremiah 6:16 Marion County was one of the original counties in Oregon, created in 1843 as Champooick District, then Champoeg County, then Marion in 1849. The county seat is Salem, which is also the state capitol. The Methodists are well-documented in Marion County with Jason Lee’s mission established in the mid-Willamette Valley in 1834. The Methodists Episcopal Church had a strong presence in Marion County, but there are other religious groups who also played an important role in the early settlement of the Willamette Valley. Marion County, OR From the last decade of the eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, America experienced the Second Great Awakening. While established Protestant denominations such as the Methodists, Baptists, and Presbyterians benefited...

A Deeper Look: Marion County

Image
Circuit Rider, Salem, Oregon And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you  bind   on   earth  will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose  on   earth  will be loosed in heaven. Matthew 16:19.   There are so many issues to pray about in Oregon in 2022. The governor’s race, the current legislative session that began February 1 st , Covid, Portland, the economy, our children and on and on. It is sometimes difficult to know where to focus our prayers. My advice is to pray in the Spirit and ask the Lord to direct your prayers where He needs them most. In this post we are looking at, if not a deeper look at least a review, of Marion County.   Marion County is one of the oldest counties in the state, one of the original four large counties (Champooick) established by the first Provisional government. It is also the site of those first meetings that created the state in Champoeg in 1843.   A rural and agri...

Praying for Oregon Counties: Marion

Image
Image by  David Mark  from  Pixabay   While I only live a short distance from the Marion County line, until I began researching for this post, I was unaware Marion County was named for Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War hero from South Carolina known as “The Swamp Fox.” The Disney TV series was one of our favorites when my brother and I were kids. The Provisional Legislature named the county after The Swamp Fox in 1849, but it was originally created in 1843 at the same time as Clackamas. There were four Districts created by that Provisional Legislature, Clackamas, Twality (Washington), Yamhill and Champooick, later renamed Marion. As with Clackamas it was much larger at first, then was reduced to its current size in 1856. Salem is the county seat. Salem is also the state capital, having been moved there from Oregon City when Oregon became a state in 1852.  It’s a pretty place, Marion County, very agricultural with lots of farms and orchards. It...
