Continue to Stand in the Gap: Hood River County

Mt. Hood and Hood County, Oregon
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals. Psalm 36:6

Hood River County is the last of the North Central Region of Oregon as we head west into the Willamette Valley. The town of Hood River is the county seat. The county is the second smallest in land area in the state and was established in 1908.

This county is known for many things, including a great deal of charm and beauty. The famous Barlow Road was built here, the first alternative created to the original Oregon Trail and the final treacherous ride down the Columbia River to the Willamette Valley. Oregon’s iconic Mt. Hood is in Hood River County, along with Timberline Lodge. The interior of the county is known for fruit orchards and farms, and the scenic route along the Columbia River for waterfalls and the views of the mighty river itself. It is a great place to buy fruit, vegetables, and salmon.

Hood River County, OR
The Hood River County Commissioners are Chair Jennifer Euwer, Leti Moretti, Ed Weathers, Arthur Babitz, and Les Perkins.

Jennifer Euwer is up for reelection for the Commission Chair, but is running unopposed.

The Hood River County Sheriff is Matt English. Since the northern edge of the county lies along the Columbia River, they take overseeing safety on the river seriously. One full-time deputy is designated as the marine deputy, who is often assisted by others in the office. Currently, Deputy Joel Carmody is the marine deputy and has been taking extra training to equip himself for the job.

The winds in the Gorge make the river an ideal place for windsurfing (and travelers often stop to watch the windsurfers at Hood River), as well as kiteboarding, and windfoiling in the summer. Other river activities that don’t necessarily need wind include paddleboarding, boating, fishing, and swimming all of which require the presence of the sheriff’s office patrols to ensure the safety of everyone. Pray for Sheriff Matt English, Deputy Joel Carmody, and the other officers as they oversee the visitors to Hood River County this summer.

The Oregon primary is one week away. Brian Beebe, the director of records and assessment for Hood River County is quoted in the Columbia Gorge News (May 14, 2024) that the voter turnout in May 2022 was 6.94% with 1,107 ballots received. In May 2020 the turnout was 12.86%. Hood River has a population of 23,977.
